Literacy & Numeracy

Our main objective is to provide the best possible teaching and learning environment for the intellectual, social, personal and physical development of each child. We have a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy as we believe that these skills will empower our students to make positive changes to their lives.

The English program at Leonora District High School provides students with the opportunity to develop essential skills in Reading, Viewing, Speaking and Listening and Writing. We have embedded Talk for Writing as our whole school writing program from K-6 since 2018. The program offers students with learning and language difficulties an opportunity to develop stronger writing skills. Feedback from students indicates that they find Talk for Writing ‘fun, engaging and motivating.’ The Letters and Sounds program aims to build children’s speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic program for teaching phonic skills for children. This program runs from K-6.

The Mathematics program at Leonora District High School provides essential skills in the strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability as outlined in the Western Australian Curriculum. The school uses First Steps- Mathematics as a whole school Mathematics program from Kindergarten to Year 10. This award winning program was developed by a team of experts and built from a solid foundation of educational research.

First Steps Maths builds conceptual understanding through classroom discussions, language development, powerful visual models and engaging hands on activities that foster student thinking. The program provides a variety of rich assessment options, enabling teachers to assess students’ knowledge and skills and make instructional decisions which focus on individual students’ needs.
